  • Sturgeon fishing: (guided trips with us call 503-551-6369)
Astoria Sturgeon fishing has been slow one day then great the next depending upon where you toss your baits and how much you are willing to move around. The Oversized sturgeon in the gorge have been biting good most days. This last week however was slower due to rapidly lowering water levels. When the river levels are changing a bunch it will always make the bite tougher. Keeper fishing upriver in the Portland area is all but done until the fall. The Portland to Bonneville dam section is mainly a giant fish show this time of year. The Willamette keeper fishery has slowed and will remain slow until the keepers come back up river from the salt in the fall and winter months. Astoria will last until around the 28th of June then it closes with a few more open days in July. They may extend it if catch rates are below the estimates.

  • Shad: The shad run this year is already winding down. It appears that this years shad run will be over 3 weeks or more early. Both the Willamette River and the Columbia River shad fishing has slowed almost to a stop.

  • Upcoming salmon seasons:
    Summer Chinook Salmon -
The season has been announced it runs June 22 to July 5 with a two fish limit and they don't have to be fin clipped. We do have a couple of dates left -
     call 503-551-6369 - This Opens Monday !!!!
Ocean coho salmon - starts on the 20th of June this year on the central and south coast and the 28th on the North coast. With a huge run of coho salmon expected, so big that 3 or more fish limits are very possible with a very long season.
Buoy 10 salmon - The Columbia river is forecast to have over 2 million fish coming back this year. The forecast calls for huge returns of hatchery coho salmon in 09. This year a 3 fish coho limit is in effect for buoy 10 after Sept 1st. During August it is the same two fish only one of which can be a chinook. Sept 1 it closes for chinook. Buoy 10 is the name for the fishery that takes place at the mouth of the Columbia River in Astoria. This fishery happens Aug to mid Sept.
Coastal Wild Coho seasons - Some exiting news this year. The numbers of wild coho expected back to our coastal rivers this year is predicted to be large enough that ODFW is proposing allowing limited harvest of wild Coho salmon in the following coastal rivers and bays - Yaquina river and bay, Nehalem river and Bay, Tillamook Bay and area rivers. Most likely will be a 5 fish annual take similar to Siltcoos lake. This is only a proposal at this point it still requires approval of the FEDs before it becomes final.
Columbia River upriver fall chinook salmon - As of now it looks like the Longview - Kelso hoglines will be open in August and up to Sept 13 or so then fishing below warrior rock will close. Upriver of Warrior to Bonneville looks as though it will stay open under permanent regs until the end of the year. Most likely that wont happen however, I am sure emergency closures will happen sometime in Sept or Oct. It will be the same old deal once the fishing gets good and we are actually catching fish they will do the math and say we caught to many and close it. For now it looks like a full season with a big run of fish lets hope it happens.

  • Steelhead: Summer fish starting to show in area streams. Decent numbers of summers are now starting to cross willamette falls which should provide some good summer steelheading in the lower Willamette in May.

  • Tired of Gill Nets?  you need to  JOIN CCA. The Coastal Conservation Association has been instrumental in the success of 100's of projects on the Gulf Coast and East Coast to reduce commercial over harvest, ban gill nets and to restore sport fisheries. We now have a Pacific Northwest Chapter. This is the best chance as sport fisherman in this region to speak with a unified voice and to actually be recognized. The goal is to reach 50,000 members regionally as soon as we can, we are already over 7000 members strong and growing.  Feel free to email me with any questions. To sign up go to one of the links below and download the form or come to the membership meeting

  • Columbia River Walleye: Check back in the spring, to busy with sturgeon and salmon this time of year.

  • Crabbing Report: Still slow but starting to improve a bit. Lots of females in the catch and sub legal males. As we get into the summer months the percentage of males and legal sized males will get better. The crab will still be soft shelled, not having much meat in them until late summer. Not worth a guided crabbing trip till late Aug but certainly a good family activity during the summer months. Each bay will have a slightly different schedule on when it gets good. usually the ones on the southern end of the state get better first.
